Tips & Tricks - Using Pictures
In GeoStudio 2004, pictures can be imported directly into the software using
the File Import command. You can use this feature to add company logos to personalize printouts and
enhance presentations. In addition, detailed drawings from *.DXF files created by
programs such as AutoCAD can be imported directly into the software, allowing the
geometry to be automatically converted into soil regions completely discretized
with finite elements (if desired).
It is important to note however, that the mindset that is usually required to create a detailed AutoCAD drawing, often conflicts with the mindset needed when developing a numerical model. A numerical model is intended to be a simplified abstraction of a complex physical reality. Incorporating a high level of detail when defining the geometry can often confuse the results, limit your understanding of the problem and cause a great deal of frustration. An interesting option is to simply import a schematic picture into the software, which can then be used as a guideline for developing the geometry within GeoStudio.
Watch a movie to see how to use pictures in your presentations
and analyses.
Software Q&A - Using your office's Network license at home
Have you ever found yourself at home wondering what is happening with the simulation
you left running on your work computer? Ever itched to continue your numerical modeling
simulations at home, but didn't have a standalone license to bring home for the
weekend? Check with your system administrator, because depending on your computer and network configuration, you may be able to use a GeoStudio network license from
outside your office. If you have the option of a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection
to connect to your office network from home, then there are two ways to use GeoStudio
at home: you can install GeoStudio on your home computer and configure it to get
its license from the license server back at the office; or you can use
a terminal services client like Microsoft's Remote Desktop (built into Windows XP) to remotely run GeoStudio with all the functionality
and power of your office computer.
