Model: Modeling Ponded Water Up Against a Slope With Version 4 or Version 5
Created: Wednesday, December 23, 1998
Updated: Wednesday, June 15, 2005
Article ID: KB219
Software involved: SLOPE/W 4, 5,
Operating Systems involved: Windows NT 4, Windows NT 3.51, Windows 98, Windows 95
Summary

This article describes how to perform a slope stability analysis where part of the slope is submerged, using SLOPE/W version 4 or version 5.

For information on how to model a partially submerged slope using SLOPE/W 2004 (version 6), please refer to KB651.

Resolution
The water can be treated as a soil with no strength and in this case the water must be Soil 1. Alternatively, the effect of the water can be applied as a pressure on the ground surface using the Pressure Line Option in SLOPE/W. With both methods the piezometric line must be along the surface of the ponded water.

The BLOCK example included with the SLOPE/W software shows how to include ponded water as a no strength soil and the COMPOSIT example shows how to model water with a pressure line. In both examples, note how the piezometric line is at the level of the ponded water.
